THE FULL STORY: During the summer of 1969, Nebraska rancher Norman Reynolds was in the market for a ranch horse. Zippo Pine Bar (Zippo Pat Bars x Dollie Pine), foaled in 1969, was a $1000 weanling purchase and was intended as a using horse sire. Plans quickly changed, however, when Reynolds’ daughter took the sorrel colt to some weanling classes where he won four out of four. Zippo went on to earn 33 halter points and 112 performance points in his show career. He led in halter classed 40 of 42 times, in Western riding 14 of 18 times, in pleasure classes 14 of 26 times, and was two for two in trail. At the end of his show career, Reynolds put Zippo out to stud. In the early 1980s, Reynolds fell on hard times. Bob and Ann Perry of Valley View, Texas, knew about Zippo and his offspring. They bought Zippo over the telephone, sight unseen, simply hoping for a few good breeding seasons with the 16-year-old horse. What they got was the leading American Quarter Horse Association sire of Performance Winners and Performance Point Earners for 12 straight years and the leading AQHA sire of money-earners. Zippo also had a tremendous impact on the American Paint horse and Appaloosa breeds, and is a leading sire for both. Zippo Pine Bar is still a true legend!
